UPCOMING SYNOD DECLARED BY POPE FRANCIS
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Peace of Christ our Universal King! Please, as we celebrate and embrace the presence of Christ in our lives as our King and source of our being, our Holy Father Pope Francis, has called for a Synod on Synodality. Please read the information below from the Archdiocese about the upcoming synod and information from the Archbishop. Thank you—Fr. Justus
As you are aware, Pope Francis has called on all dioceses to participate in a worldwide Synod. Archbishop Sample is responding to the Holy Father’s call by initiating in the Archdiocese of Portland a process where we will journey together in faith by engaging in prayer, listening, and discernment. The theme for the Synod is: Communion, Participation and Mission. By joining together in prayer and unity, listening to one another, and discerning the will of the Holy Spirit for the Church in our Ɵmes, the people of God in western Oregon will be able to accomplish the work of the Synod and fulfill our primary mission of evangelization.
The Vatican recently extended the deadline of the diocesan consultation period for the Synod until August of 2022. We will make full use of the additional four months to carry out the work of the Synod in the Archdiocese of Portland more effectively. Please assure the faithful in western Oregon that Archbishop Sample is taking the Synod very seriously. He is calling for a genuine and robust fulfillment of the listening and discernment the Holy Father has asked us to accomplish. To this end, we are beginning our participation in the Synod with an intense, diocesanwide prayer campaign. Your help is needed to make the prayer campaign successful. Please promote prayer for the Synod in your parishes and organizations. Include the intention of the Synod at Holy Masses and encourage the faithful to pray the Vatican’s official Synod prayer regularly (English / Spanish). At the urging of the Holy Father and Archbishop Sample, there will be a particular focus on adoration. Parishes and religious communities are asked to organize periods of Eucharistic adoration for the intentions of the Synod. All Catholic groups and organizations, families and individuals are asked to support these efforts and otherwise pray intensely for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during the synodal process. The Vatican’s prayer website is here: The Church on the way (prayforthesynod.va). Listen to the Archbishop’s inspiring homily and find other Synod resources HERE. Early in 2022, the Archdiocese of Portland, with the help of the clergy, the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, and Catholic leaders, will organize widespread listening sessions and other opportunities for participation in the Synod. Please stay tuned for additional information. In the meantime, if you have questions about the Synod or resources to share, don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you!
Preparing for Awareness and Commitment’s Weekend for Star of the Sea Parish Brookings, and St. Charles Gold Beach
Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal will receive a mailing from Archbishop Sample within the next few days. At all Masses
next weekend, additional information will be provided in brochures. Appeal funds are used to help fund Archdiocesan offices and agencies that assist the parishes and their people. In addition, part of the funds are used to assist retired archdiocesan priests and seminarian education.
The theme of the 2022 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is, “One Church, United in Christ.” As you consider the amount you are able to pledge to help these ministries, please reflect on the following: Contributing to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is to journey with others toward Heaven. Take a moment to honestly examine all the God-given blessings in your life and then ask not yourself, but ask God: “What is just?” By our baptism and our confirmation in the Catholic church, each of us is called to serve as a good shepherd. We’re called not only to follow Christ but to be Christ.
Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as you consider the above reflections, and please give generously according to the blessings God has given you.

Next Weekend February 26 and 27, 2022, Commitment’s Weekend Day
Next weekend is Commitment Weekend for the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. During Mass we will watch a video from Archbishop Sample about the Appeal. If you received a personalized commitment card in the mail, please bring it to Mass with you as we join together to support our Catholic Church in western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card in the mail, pledge envelopes will be available during Mass.
This next week, please read the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal materials you received last week and prayerfully reflect on the level of commitment you will make next weekend.
The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal provides substantial financial support to essential ministries that support parishes in our Catholic Church in western Oregon. These programs provide education and faith formation at all levels and provide a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of people.
When we stop to count our abundant blessings, we are aware of how truly blessed we are. The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is an invitation to share your blessings and support for the Gospel mission here in western Oregon.
Your pledge is also a sign of your gratitude for God’s generous abundance. While we can never out-do God in generosity, we are called to join in the mission of the Gospel as we put forth the gifts of life, goodness, and grace through the sharing of our own blessings from God.
We are pleased to announce that our Parish 2021-2022 Faith Formation classes/programs will resume fully on September 29, 2021.
Please call the Parish office for registration or talk with the Sister Fidel after Masses for questions and clarifications you might have concerning the program.
We are open to helping you get through any problem that might keep you away from receiving the Sacraments of:
* Baptism
* First Holy Communion
* Confirmation
* RCIA
* Marriage
Blessings and Love of Christ to you all!
